I
studied illustration and graduated from Central St Martins in
1994. Since then I have combined painting and drawing with
teaching - mostly in the early years. I love working with very young
children and am fascinated by how amazingly quickly they develop. Even
the tiniest baby is so full of personality. After the arrival of my own
baby in 2006 I decided to work solely on painting and began working on
portraits of babies and children.
I work predominantly in gouache, which is very similar to watercolour,
but has a denser and more intense quality with a high level of pigment.
This enables me to create what I hope are rich, delicate images. I also
use a variety of other materials such as gold and silver leaf.
I aim to provide paintings of babies and children which reflect their
personalities, and also the personalities of their family. Careful
consideration of the child's expression, what they are wearing and the
background surface combine to convey a sense of who they are. I am also
interested in hand lettering and often incorporate the child's name
into the painting. I can also include other significant information
such as birth dates, place and so on.
